Well, our students are ready for school. School opened October 3rd and the students were so excited to receive their new backpacks and school supplies for the new year. What a remarkable change in just one year! Each student took a seat and waited for their name to be called. One by one they came to the front to receive their supplies. One boy was so happy he just kept kissing his backpack. The smiles from the children lit up the room as they showed their packs to one another. One of my favorite moments was from one of our older students, Donia. She is very tall for her age, and underneath her tough exterior, is very much a "girly" girl. She received a beautiful teal plaid backpack and you could see in her eyes that she loved it. One of our staff members was comparing her backpack with another (size wise) and I think she thought he was trying to switch backpacks with her. She didn't say a word, but the smile that lit up her face faded. I quietly moved the staff member to the side, leaving Donia with her beautiful backpack and her smile returned - bigger than ever. She pulled the backpack close to her. It was priceless! These small moments are what really make my heart melt. It was also wonderful to see some of the girls wearing dresses made by some of our volunteers. (the picture of the girl at the top of the blog is one of them). We are just so thankful for everyone who has joined in to make a difference in this community. It has been a blessing to us, the children, and their families. Thank you and God Bless!
